For building 600 metres of quay wall, we needed 4,000 concrete blocks or about 100,000 cubic metres of concrete. But Ghana has few concrete batching plants that could reliably meet this demand and quality requirements. That is why Jan De Nul built its own concrete batching plant.
Jort Moermans: “In two and a half weeks’ time, we put together a concrete batching plant, including a belt conveyor for the sand and gravel. We already had two cement silos of 90 tonnes each. We soon added another three silos of 120 tonnes, which resulted in a total stock of 540 tonnes of cement. We also have 8 water tanks with a total content of 160,000 litres. We need this stock to enable us to work continuously because the main water distribution is not always reliable. If needed, extra water is supplied with tank lorries. Every day, we produce up to twenty blocks.”
