In 2016, two Jan De Nul vessels have been dredging in the port of Hamburg. This port suffers from sedimentation. The amount of sediments that is being deposited depends on the amount of water entering a port. As long as the flow rate of the Elbe is sufficiently high, there is not much standing water in Hamburg and the port will take care of itself. But if little water is supplied, as in the last couple of years, water will dam up at high tide causing the water to stand still from time to time so that sediments will no longer be carried along with the stream and will be deposited. This downstream supply of sediments is very typical of inland ports such as Hamburg and Antwerp. As a result, such ports need maintenance dredging works. The non-contaminated sediments dredged in Hamburg were re-dumped into a demarcated area at the North Sea under strict environmental conditions. The distance between the port and the coast amounts to 180 km, Jan De Nul’s vessels needed a day for sailing back and forth.”
